Mohawk’s
Friends
The organization “Mohawk’s
Friends” was established Monday July 2004. The members are current
and former members of Sjøkorpset. The aim of the organization is
to assist Sjøkorpset in practical end ecomomic matters connected
to restoring S/Y Mohawk II.

Some of the older officers who have been involved since
S/Y Mohawk II sank, took the initiative and set up a meeting, which aim
was to figure out what to do with Mohawk. Everyone totally agreed that
there was no way the boat would be condemned. The only option is to start
working on getting her fixed and restored.
A lot of former members and officers have contacted Sjøkorpset,
not knowing what to do and how to help. Sjøkorpset’s Board
of Directors decided that some coordination was necessary, and that people
were not to ask for grants and sponsorships from third parties without
first consulting someone. The aim of the meeting was to accomplish two
things: to assemble all the people who wanted to help, and to find a way
to organize the work. The result was the organization “Mohawk’s
Friends”.
“Mohawk’s Friends” was established as a separate organization,
as there were no natural connection between fundraising and Sjøkorpset’s
primary purpose, which is sail training for youngsters (seaman ship, safety
and sailing)
The aim of Mohawk’s Friends is to assist Sjøkorpset in practical
and economic matters connected to restoring Mohawk. The organization is
open for everyone, and the work has already started.
About 30 people attended the meeting, and most of them were familiar to
those who have completed several nautical miles onboard Mohawk. People
were highly motivated to get started, and high motivation is necessary
to accomplish the goal of getting the boat back to sea.
The organization established a Board of Directors:
Chairman of the Board: Grete Syverstuen
Board member: Erik E. Berg
Board member: Glenn Ivar Klausen
Board member: Per Olaf Tangen
Board member: Rune Tollisen
Another fundraising coordination committee was also
established to coordinate specific parts of the work connected to fundraising.
There is no doubt that the work connected to this will be tremendous as
extensive repairs are necessary.
